Thursday 16th November, at 6 p.m.
The English Bookshop, Södermannagatan 22.

The President of the Swedish-British Society, Professor Wilhelm Engström and his co-author Dr Fergal Donnelly will jointly release their latest book "99 Americanisms that captured the world" at the English Bookshop, Södermannagatan 22, Stockholm. The authors will expand on the“….two countries divided by a common language” a bon mot normally attributed to Oscar Wilde. It sounds innocuous enough to our ears, as do 'reliable', 'influential' and 'lengthy', which all inspired loathing when they first crossed the Atlantic.

For Americans, time is money and the transaction comes first, while building relationships are a long way behind. Go into a meeting and the British want to spend some time settling in, asking about your journey and offering coffee. Americans ignore the pleasantries and throw themselves into the business. Understanding the game of linguistic and cultural differences can make the course of business run more smoothly but even if we learn each other's language there is still a natural barrier that keeps our two worlds apart. Wine and snacks will be served on the house. To register, call 08-678 73 33 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by 13th November.
